Sailor Moon Crystal Act 22 “Hidden Agenda – Nemesis” Review

After how well-paced, well-directed, and well-animated Act 21 was, I expected Act 22 to be developed similarly. Although the episode did not carry the same weight as Act 21 did, it was still very good in its own right.

act22-1

Choosing to follow Chibi-usa, Tuxedo Mask runs out into space-time after her. What’s unfortunate is that he did not carefully plan this through, which is why I also disliked this scene in the manga. It’s very sweet how much he cares for her but if he did find her, how will they get back? Neither one has a space-time key, which is what Pluto said they needed to get back.

act22-2

Usagi (still dressed in a faux Neo Queen Serenity outfit that looks nothing like Neo Queen Serenity’s. Some fanboy you are, Demande) walks around the castle and hears Saphir and Rubeus gossiping about their distrust of Nemesis. She’s weakened by the effects of the Malefic Black Crystal and she’s still feeling disoriented over not having her Soldiers with her. She hears her squad is still alive and seems to cheer up a little, but the emotional impact of it all wasn’t entirely there for me.

act22-7

act22-3

Saphir takes his hatred of Neo Queen Serenity out on Usagi and of course, Neo Queen Serenity comes to her rescue. It was the prettiest and best executed scene of the episode, in my opinion. The colors were beautiful and it was a really well-written scene.

act22-4

Neo Queen Serenity takes over Sailor Moon for a moment and it’s awesome. So well delivered. I loved it. I can’t imagine this being any better than it was.

act22-5

Near the end of the episode, a mysterious entity guides Tuxedo Mask. Who could she possibly be?

act22-6

The animation was not as fluid as Act 21’s was and I was disappointed, as I thought Act 21 was the best animated (and honestly, best overall) episode of the series so far. One of the final scenes of the episode was when the Soldiers met up again and it was my least favorite scene of the whole episode. The moment was underwhelming and the animation wasn’t at its best. The quality of the animation dwindled a bit by the end of the episode, as depicted above.

Overall, I did really enjoy this episode. Perhaps its unfair of me to judge it so harshly after the last episode but I was expecting higher quality animation and coloring. Even then, I do like Act 22 a lot! I enjoyed the writing and most of the pacing but there were moments where the episode didn’t live up to its potential. I have very high hopes for the next episode! 3.8/5 stars for me.

What do you all think? ♥
